Upbeat country-rock tune with a little humor and honky-tonk flair
[Intro]
After weeks of searchin’, Venom found his home,
A field of dust and quiet, where rattlesnakes roam.
Between Throckmorton and Oak Grove Cemetery,
He built his hideout like something revolutionary.
[Verse 1]
Venom came down to Texas, lookin’ for a fight,
Thought he’d rule the rattlesnakes and own the starry night.
But when he strutted into Throckmorton with that big ol’ grin,
The locals just laughed and said, “Boy, where you been?”
He thought he’d show them how to rope a snake,
But those rattlers slithered off, not even a shake.
Tried to brand ’em as his army, but they weren’t impressed,
They just coiled up and hissed, “You ain’t from the West!”
[Chorus]
Even the snakes in Texas reject Venom,
They see that black suit and say, “Man, we don’t want him!”
He’s all tangled up in his symbiote goo,
But those rattlers keep sayin’, “You ain’t got a clue!”
Even the snakes in Texas reject Venom,
They’d rather take their chances with a tumbleweed than him!
[Verse 2]
He thought he’d blend in, sportin’ that cowboy hat,
But his symbiote ate it, and that was that.
Tried to ride a horse, but the bronc bucked him into Oklahoma,
“Stick to webs and skyscrapers, you’re no rancher, boss.”
He entered a rattlesnake rodeo, thought he’d win it all,
But by the end of the day, he couldn’t even crawl.
Tied himself in knots, tryin’ to lasso a snake,
While Gus and Call just laughed, “Boy, that’s a mistake.”
[Chorus]
Even the snakes in Texas reject Venom,
They see that black suit and say, “Man, we don’t want him!”
He’s all tangled up in his symbiote goo,
But those rattlers keep sayin’, “You ain’t got a clue!”
Even the snakes in Texas reject Venom,
They’d rather face a dust storm than get stuck with him!
[Bridge]
Tried his hand at BBQ, burned it all to black,
Told the folks at the cookout, “I’m never comin’ back!”
Tried to scare a rancher, gave a mighty growl,
But that ol’ cowboy just shrugged, “We’ve seen worse, pal.”
Even Spider-Man showed up, swingin’ in to see,
But a rattlesnake bit him, and Venom laughed with glee.
“Looks like your spider-sense don’t work out here,
These rattlers ain’t afraid of webs or city fear!”
[Chorus]
Even the snakes in Texas reject Venom,
They see that black suit and say, “Man, we don’t want him!”
He’s all tangled up in his symbiote goo,
But those rattlers keep sayin’, “You ain’t got a clue!”
Even the snakes in Texas reject Venom,
They’d rather face the cattle than deal with him!
[Outro]
So if you’re ever in Throckmorton, and you see that grin,
Just remember, even the rattlers won’t let Venom in.
He might be scary in the city lights,
But out in Texas, those rattlers win the fight.
Instrumental guitar outro with a playful honky-tonk vibe
The Snakes in Texas Ain’t Scared — Music and Lyrics by Alan Nafzger
The Rattlesnakes at Oak Grove
By Alan Nafzger (1990)
Out past Throckmorton, where the winds don’t stop,
Sits Oak Grove Cemetery on a sunburnt crop.
Where the dust kicks high and the sun beats low,
A stranger came wanderin’, thought he’d run the show.
He called himself Venom, with a grin full of spite,
Draped in black shadows, ready to fight.
But the land don’t bend to city-born fools,
And the rattlesnakes out here don’t follow no rules.
[Chorus]
The rattlesnakes at Oak Grove don’t play no game,
They’ll bite and they’ll strike and they’ll put you to shame.
Even Venom found, when he strutted with pride,
The snakes in Texas are tougher—no place to hide.
He came to stake ground in that desolate spot,
A field of dry bones and earth turned hot.
But when he laid down his claim on the Texas dirt,
Them rattlers just laughed, didn’t feel no hurt.
With a hiss and a shake, they circled him ’round,
Made him trip, stumble, and crash to the ground.
That symbiote of his tried to show some fight,
But Texas rattlesnakes don’t care for the sight.
[Chorus]
The rattlesnakes at Oak Grove don’t play no game,
They’ll bite and they’ll strike and they’ll put you to shame.
Even Venom found, when he strutted with pride,
The snakes in Texas are tougher—no place to hide.
He slithered and hissed, tried to hold his ground,
But those rattlers struck fast without a sound.
His tendrils tangled, his fangs couldn’t land,
And them rattlers just coiled, taking a stand.
Venom thought Gotham made him tough and mean,
But he ain’t met rattlers like these, lean and keen.
They don’t care ‘bout webs or symbiote lore,
Out here, it’s the bite that settles the score.
[Chorus]
The rattlesnakes at Oak Grove don’t play no game,
They’ll bite and they’ll strike and they’ll put you to shame.
Even Venom found, when he strutted with pride,
The snakes in Texas are tougher—no place to hide.
He limped out of Oak Grove with his tail tucked in tight,
Learned a lesson ‘bout snakes and their Texas-born might.
Now the wind still whispers through that old cemetery,
Of how Venom lost to snakes and their wild territory.
So, if you’re thinkin’ of testin’ the Texas ground,
Just know the rattlesnakes are always around.
They’ll strike at pride, power, or a hero’s fame,
‘Cause here in Texas, snakes win the game.
[Chorus]
The rattlesnakes at Oak Grove don’t play no game,
They’ll bite and they’ll strike and they’ll put you to shame.
Even Venom found, when he strutted with pride,
The snakes in Texas are tougher—no place to hide.
